How Long Should a Short Be? The Best Length for YouTube Shorts, TikTok, and Reels
The maximum and the best length for YouTube Shorts, TikTok videos, and Instagram Reels in 2026, and how to choose the right length for each clip from a talking video.
· 5 min read
"How long should my short be?" is one of the most common questions in short-form video, and the answer has changed. YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels now accept videos up to three minutes, and TikTok goes longer still. So the question is no longer just "what's allowed?" but "what length gets watched?"
This guide covers the current limits on each platform, the length range that works for most talking videos, and a simple way to decide how long each clip should be.
The limits in 2026
| Platform | Maximum length | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts | 3 minutes (since October 2024) | Vertical or square |
| Instagram Reels | 3 minutes (since January 2025) | Vertical, 9:16 |
| TikTok | 10 minutes when recording in the app; uploads can be longer on many accounts | Vertical, 9:16 |
Limits differ by account and region on some platforms, and they keep changing, so check the upload screen of each app if you're near the edge. For a talking clip you'll rarely get close to these numbers anyway.
Maximum length isn't the best length
Each platform's feed rewards videos that people watch to the end and watch again. That is much easier for a 30-second clip than for a 3-minute one. A longer short isn't penalised for being long, but it has many more seconds in which a viewer can decide to swipe.
Think of it this way: a short should be exactly as long as one idea takes to land. Every second beyond that is a second the viewer has to choose to stay.

The sweet spot: 15 to 60 seconds
For clips cut from talking videos (podcasts, lessons, talks, interviews), most strong shorts land between 15 and 60 seconds:
- 15 to 30 seconds: one sharp point. A surprising number, a one-line piece of advice, a punchline. Easy to watch twice, which is good for loops and rewatches.
- 30 to 45 seconds: a claim and its reason, or a mini story with a setup and a turn. The most common length for strong podcast clips.
- 45 to 60 seconds: a short how-to with steps, or a story that needs a bit more setup. Works when every sentence earns its place.
- Over 60 seconds: only when the idea truly needs it, such as a complete explanation or a story that falls apart if trimmed. Pacing has to be tight.
Under 15 seconds, a talking clip usually doesn't have room for a complete thought; it can feel like a fragment.
How to choose the length of each clip
Instead of aiming at a number, cut each clip to its natural shape:
- Find where the idea starts. Not where the speaker starts talking, but where it gets interesting. That's your first frame.
- Find where the thought lands. The strongest closing line. That's your last frame.
- Remove what's in between that doesn't serve it. Pauses, false starts, side notes, "you know what I mean".
- Look at the length. If it's over a minute, ask whether it's really two ideas. If so, it's two shorts.
This method gives you clips of different lengths, and that's good. Mixing 20-second and 50-second shorts also tells you which your audience prefers.
Length by platform
YouTube Shorts
Shorts up to three minutes are allowed, and YouTube shows them in the same Shorts feed. For talking clips, 20 to 60 seconds remains the reliable range. Longer Shorts can work for explainers when the hook is strong and the pacing is fast. If you post the full video on the same channel, link it from the Short's description so interested viewers can keep going.
TikTok
TikTok supports much longer videos and has been encouraging them, but its feed is still built on quick decisions. Talking clips do well in the 20 to 60 second range; longer explainers work for audiences that already know you. A clear on-screen hook matters even more here, because people scroll fast.
Instagram Reels
Reels can now run up to three minutes. Short, polished clips under a minute remain the safest choice for reaching people who don't follow you yet, and captions are especially important because many people browse Instagram with the sound off.
Common length mistakes
- Padding to hit a number. Stretching a 25-second idea to 60 seconds because "longer is better" adds exactly the seconds where people leave.
- Cutting the payoff to stay short. A clip that stops before the punchline or the final step feels broken. Trim the setup instead.
- Keeping the warm-up. The first sentence of an answer is often a restatement of the question. Start one sentence later.
- One length for everything. A quick tip and a story don't need the same time. Let each clip be as long as its idea.
- Ignoring the data. After a few weeks, check where viewers drop off in each platform's analytics and adjust how tightly you cut.
Length and retention work together
Length is only one part of keeping people watching. A tight 50-second clip with a great hook, readable captions, and a visual change every few seconds will outperform a loose 25-second one. Our guide on what makes a short keep people watching covers hooks, captions, pacing, and B-roll in detail.
How Postmotion decides the length
Postmotion picks moments of 15 to 60 seconds from your video, about one per three minutes, up to 20 from an hour. Each starts on a strong line and ends where the thought lands, so the length follows the idea rather than a fixed timer. If a clip feels too long or too short, you can trim it in the editor, cutting on exact word boundaries, for free. Each short is exported as a 1080 × 1920 MP4 that fits YouTube Shorts, TikTok, and Reels alike.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum length of a YouTube Short?
Three minutes. YouTube raised the limit from 60 seconds in October 2024. The video must be vertical or square to count as a Short.
What's the best length for a YouTube Short?
For most talking clips, 20 to 60 seconds. Make the clip as long as one complete idea takes, and cut everything that doesn't serve it.
How long can an Instagram Reel be?
Up to three minutes, since January 2025. Shorter Reels under a minute are still the most reliable way to reach new viewers.
How long can a TikTok be?
Recording in the TikTok app goes up to 10 minutes, and many accounts can upload longer videos. Check the upload screen in your app for your account's current limit.
Are longer shorts better for the algorithm?
Not by themselves. Feeds reward videos people finish and rewatch. A longer short only does better if its extra seconds keep people watching.
